Tips & Tricks

UPPER THREAD BREAKING

n      Check your tension

n      Rethread your machine

n      Change your needle (Do you have the correct size for the thread you are using? Correct type for the fabric you are using?)

n      Is the thread getting caught on the spindle? Are you using a spool cap?  Often there are large and small caps available for your machine.  These help to prevent thread tangles.  Sometimes they work best pushed flat to the spool and other times they do better with the raised end pushed inside of the spool end.

n      Try using a thread stand or placing the thread to the side of the machine in a small cup or jar. Try skipping the last thread guide.

n      Switch from a horizontal to a vertical spool position or vice versa

n      Turn the spool over or to the other side.  Be careful if the spool has a thread catch slit on it, to turn that end of the spool away from the unwinding end.

BOBBIN THREAD BREAKING

n      Pull out your bobbin case and rethread

n      Is the bobbin in correctly?  (Check your manual)

n      Are you using a bobbin designed for your machine?  (dollar store bobbins or those from other brands are not meant for your machine.)

n      Check for loose threads and lint buildup in the bobbin area

n      Is the bobbin wound evenly?

n      Check your bobbin case tension

n      Have you broken a needle recently?  Whenever you do, collect all of the bits and be sure that you have recovered the entire needle.  Stray bits of metal in you bobbin case is a no-no!
